Proper storage of idle and unused grinding wheels is essential to maintain their structural stability, performance and service life, as well as to eliminate potential safety hazards during later operation. All grinding wheels shall be stored in a standardized, classified and managed way in accordance with professional specifications, and the following strict requirements must be followed.

First of all, strict control over the storage environment is the primary premise. The storage warehouse must be cool, dry, well-ventilated and clean. The ambient temperature should be kept between 5℃ and 35℃, and the optimal temperature range is 15℃ to 25℃. Direct sunlight exposure is strictly prohibited, and the storage area must be far away from all heat sources such as heating equipment, welding machines and industrial furnaces to prevent sharp temperature changes, which will easily cause internal stress and invisible cracks inside the grinding wheels. The relative air humidity shall not exceed 70%. Excessively humid air will erode the bonding agent of grinding wheels, especially resin-bonded and rubber-bonded grinding wheels. Dampness will greatly reduce their hardness, toughness and rotational strength, greatly increasing the risk of fragmentation during high-speed operation. In addition, the warehouse must be isolated from corrosive substances such as acid, alkali, oil and chemical gases, as these substances will corrode the wheel body and bonding layer and damage the overall performance. All grinding wheels must be placed on wooden pallets or special storage shelves with a height of more than 10 centimeters off the ground, and it is forbidden to place them directly on the ground to prevent moisture from the ground from soaking the wheels.

Secondly, standardize the stacking and placement methods according to different types, shapes and sizes of grinding wheels to avoid deformation, collision and extrusion damage. For large-diameter grinding wheels, they must be placed upright on dedicated fixed brackets. Firm fixation can effectively prevent the wheels from tilting, falling or rolling, so as to avoid edge chipping and surface damage caused by collision. Thin-type cutting wheels and ultra-thin grinding wheels are not suitable for vertical placement. They should be laid flat horizontally, with cardboard or soft cushion pads between each layer to buffer friction and pressure. The total stacking height shall not exceed 50 centimeters, and it is absolutely forbidden to place heavy objects on the stacked wheels to prevent permanent deformation and internal cracks caused by extrusion. Bowl-shaped, cup-shaped and disc-shaped special-shaped grinding wheels shall be placed with the bottom facing down and stacked neatly. Inverted placement is not allowed to prevent the working surface from being worn or damaged. Small-sized miniature grinding wheels can be hung in classified racks or placed in separate grid boxes for unified management. All grinding wheels must be stored in different areas by specifications, models and production batches, with clear labels marked on the shelf. The management principle of "first in, first out" must be implemented to ensure that the wheels with earlier production dates are used preferentially and avoid long-term backlog.

Thirdly, clarify the storage validity period and regular inspection rules. Different bonded grinding wheels have different shelf lives due to material characteristics. The valid storage period of resin-bonded grinding wheels is 1 year, and rubber-bonded grinding wheels can be stored for up to 2 years. Ceramic and diamond grinding wheels have stable material properties and a relatively longer storage cycle, but it is still recommended to use them within 2 years. Any grinding wheel that exceeds the specified storage period cannot be put into use directly. Before assembly and operation, comprehensive quality inspection must be carried out. Operators shall first check the appearance to observe whether there are visible cracks, gaps, chipped edges, deformation and surface damp marks. Then conduct percussion inspection: tap the wheel gently with a small wooden stick. A clear and crisp sound indicates good condition, while a dull and hoarse sound means there are internal hidden cracks, and such wheels must be scrapped immediately. Daily patrol inspection shall be arranged for the storage area. Once damaged, damp or expired unqualified products are found, they shall be sorted out in a timely manner and isolated for scrapping to prevent mixed use with qualified products.

Finally, keep in mind all prohibitive behaviors in storage. It is forbidden to stack grinding wheels in open air, humid workshops or near water sources. It is forbidden to place the wheels obliquely, stack them excessively high or squeeze them forcibly. It is also not allowed to mix grinding wheels with hard metal parts to prevent collision and scratching. Damaged, cracked or expired grinding wheels are never allowed to be reused after simple repair. Standardized storage and regular inspection can effectively protect the quality of grinding wheels, extend their service life and guarantee the safety of on-site operation.
