Selecting the proper thickness of a grinding wheel is one of the most critical steps to ensure safe operation, stable grinding quality and long service life in metal processing. Improper wheel thickness will lead to frequent wheel breakage, excessive workpiece burrs, severe vibration during grinding, low processing efficiency and even serious personal safety accidents. The selection should be comprehensively determined according to processing types, grinding depth, workpiece material, contact area, machine tool power and operational requirements, instead of choosing thickness blindly based on experience only.

First of all, match wheel thickness according to specific grinding process scenarios, which is the core selection basis. For cutting-off work, ultra-thin grinding wheels with a thickness ranging from 0.8mm to 1.6mm are the optimal choice. These thin wheels have small contact friction with workpieces, low cutting heat and narrow cutting seams, which can save raw materials and improve cutting efficiency. They are widely used for cutting steel pipes, steel bars, stainless steel profiles and sheet metal. However, ultra-thin wheels cannot bear heavy impact load, so they are forbidden for heavy grinding and side grinding operations.

For conventional surface grinding and weld polishing, medium-thickness grinding wheels with 3mm to 6mm thickness are the most versatile option. This type of wheel balances structural strength and grinding flexibility perfectly. It can withstand moderate grinding pressure, remove surface rust, oxide layers and welding spots stably without obvious vibration or wheel deformation. It is the most commonly used specification for daily handheld angle grinder operation in machinery factories, automobile maintenance workshops and hardware processing plants.

For heavy-duty rough grinding and large-scale surface material removal, thick grinding wheels with thickness above 6mm are required. Thickened wheels own higher overall structural rigidity and impact resistance, which can cope with large grinding depth and continuous heavy-pressure grinding. They are suitable for removing large welding beads, polishing thick casting burrs and rough surface finishing of steel structural parts. It is worth noting that thicker wheels generate larger grinding resistance, so they need to be matched with high-power grinding machines to avoid insufficient machine power and stagnant grinding work.

Besides processing types, workpiece hardness and contact area also affect thickness selection. When grinding hard materials such as alloy steel and hardened steel, slightly thicker wheels are recommended to prevent wheel edge collapse and uneven wear caused by hard impact. When processing soft materials like aluminum and copper, thinner wheels are better to reduce material adhesion and wheel blockage. Meanwhile, smaller grinding contact areas match thinner wheels, while large-area plane grinding needs thicker wheels to maintain overall stability during high-speed rotation.

There are two key safety taboos for thickness selection. Firstly, never use an ultra-thin wheel for side grinding, as lateral force will directly crack the thin wheel and cause flying fragments. Secondly, do not use an excessively thick wheel on a low-power small grinder, which will cause motor overload, overheating and accelerated machine aging. In addition, all selected wheels must strictly comply with the rated rotating speed marked on the wheel surface, and the thickness specification shall meet the national industrial safety standards.

In conclusion, the thickness selection of grinding wheels follows a clear logic: thin wheels for cutting and fine polishing, medium thickness for universal surface grinding, and thick wheels for heavy rough grinding. Combining process demand, workpiece material and machine tool performance can maximize grinding efficiency, protect equipment and eliminate potential safety hazards fundamentally.
