Grinding wheels are essential abrasive tools in industrial production, and they are classified according to several practical standards to meet different processing requirements. The most common classification is based on abrasive materials, which directly determines their applicable workpieces. Aluminum oxide grinding wheels are the most widely used type. They feature good toughness and are mainly applied to grind carbon steel, stainless steel and other ferrous metals, ideal for both rough grinding and fine finishing. Silicon carbide wheels have higher hardness and sharp cutting edges, so they are suitable for brittle materials such as stone, glass and ceramics. For ultra-hard alloys and precision workpieces, diamond grinding wheels are adopted due to their outstanding wear resistance.

Classification by shape is also very popular in daily use. Straight grinding wheels are the most universal, commonly used for surface grinding and general cutting work. Cup-shaped wheels are designed for processing inner holes and curved surfaces. Dish-shaped wheels are specially made to sharpen various cutting tools. Special-shaped wheels are customized for complex machining tasks in different industries.

In addition, grinding wheels are divided by grain size. Coarse grains remove excess material quickly for rough processing, while fine grains create smooth surfaces for precision polishing. They can also be grouped by bonding agents. Ceramic-bonded wheels have high hardness and stability for heavy-duty work. Resin-bonded wheels are flexible and often used for cutting operations. Rubber-bonded wheels deliver fine surface effects and are suitable for delicate finishing.

Reasonable selection of grinding wheels based on these classifications can improve processing quality, raise work efficiency and extend the service life of both wheels and machines.
